Currently there are existing 29 Free Zones in the U.A.E.
The primary advantage of establishing a branch office in a Free Trade Zone is 100% foreign ownership.
Most of the Free Zones are tailored to meet the needs of industrial, shipping and manufacturing enterprises. As such, the Free Zones tend to be located near major ports and have large warehousing and storage facilities available.
Some Free Zones offer the option of setting up a business as an E-Office (= virtual office). This type of license is most favoured by small business owners, who can enjoy the same incentives of a Free Zone as all other licensees. (NOTE: E-Offices are limited to licenses with a number of pure service activities only)
For small business owners, who require physical office space, the Free Zones offer a "hot-desk or flexi-desk" solution, which includes a desk in a business centre along with phone, fax and P.O Box facilities.
The Free Zones were established to attract foreign capital and investors by offering incentives such as:
- 100% foreign ownership of the enterprise;
- 100% import and export tax exemptions;
- 100% repatriation of capital and profits;
- No corporate taxes for 15 years, renewable for an additional 15 years;
- No personal income taxes;
Important:
An independent Free Zone Authority governs each free zone, and is the agency responsible for issuing Free Zone operating licenses and assisting companies with establishing their business in the Free Zone.
A License issued from a Free Zone Authority is limited to the area of the particular Free Zone which means conducting business in the U.A.E. market itself is prohibited.
The foundation of an Free Zone entity offers various kinds of company structures:
- Branch
- Free Zone Establishment (FZE)
- Free Zone Company (FZCO)
- Free Zone Limited Liability Company (FZ-LLC)
